Dibentuk pada tahun 1996 oleh penulis lagu / keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, gitaris Emppu Vuorinen, dan mantan vokalis Tarja Turunen.
Nightwish adalah band Finlandia paling sukses dengan lebih dari 7 juta album dan single terjual di seluruh dunia, 1 perak penghargaan, 11 penghargaan emas dan 30 penghargaan platinum.
Lirik lagu Nightwish bertemakan tentang cinta, alam, astrologi, mitologi, fantasi, metafisika, cerita tradisional, dan ditulis dalam bahasa Inggris dan Finlandia.
Awalnya, gaya musik Nightwish dipengaruhi oleh band-band Metal seperti Children of Bodom, My Dying Bride, Tiamat, The 3rd and the Mortal, dan vokalis Epica, Simone Simons.
Setelah kepergian Tarja Turunen, Nightwish mulai meninggalkan “opera vocals” di album-album selanjutnya.
